Shelley Kalb received her Master's in Education (M.Ed) in Literacy Education from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland. Shelley is a Certified Reading Specialist (K-12), and has more than 25 years' experience as a classroom teacher and principal.
Shelley has worked with students of varying abilities and learning styles, using her training in the Orton–Gillingham methodology, an instructional approach intended primarily for use with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing, including students diagnosed with dyslexia. Many experts consider the Orton–Gillingham method the gold standard when it comes to teaching reading to kids with dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham Approach always is focused upon the learning needs of the individual student. Practitioners design lessons and materials to work with students at the level they present by pacing instruction and the introduction of new materials to their individual strengths and weaknesses.
Working one-on-one with a learning specialist will help students who may need a new approach to subject matter because of overarching learning differences, such as ADHD and dyslexia. Learning specialists have advanced degrees in education and employ various methodologies. Working with a learning specialist can transform how your child approaches academic experiences, builds self-confidence, allows for strengths and weaknesses to be addressed more consistently, and enables your child to focus and absorb the academic material. We understand that children are unique learners and are committed to supporting students with different learning styles.
We do not use a prepackaged program because we have yet to meet a student who comes prepackaged! We customize a program to meet the specific needs of your child, taking into consideration evaluations, as well as school reports, teacher recommendations, and most of all, input from parents and students. Our goal is to help students meet and exceed academic expectations. To this end, we will work with you to establish an individualized learning plan that details strengths, weaknesses, and educational goals.
